It was a period of transition from simple functional utility to complex, carved status symbols, marked by strict guild craftsmanship and highly localised regional designs. Because oak was so heavily used—not only for domestic furniture but also for shipbuilding, underwood heating, and leather tanning—timber prices soared during the 17th century. By the turn of the 18th century, the growing scarcity of oak forced cabinetmakers to transition to lighter, more exotic woods, bringing the great “Age of Oak” to a gradual close. In the 1600’s, solid oak was the most coveted and durable timber in Europe. Known as the “Age of Oak,” these heavy four-poster “tester” beds were monumental status symbols. They featured intricate carvings, rope-strung mattress supports, and thick fabric curtains designed to retain heat. During the 18th century, oak beds underwent a major transition. The period saw a shift away from the heavy, monumental, and elaborately carved oak “tester” (four-poster) beds of the Tudor and Stuart eras. Instead, makers embraced the lighter, more refined, and symmetrical designs associated with the Georgian and Neoclassical periods.Source: https://countryoak.co.uk/2023/06/19/the-historical-significance-of-oak-in-furniture-making/Source: https://www.antiques.co.uk/blog/The-many-reasons-to-love-antique-17th-Century-English-furnitureSource: https://countryoak.co.uk/2023/06/19/the-historical-significance-of-oak-in-furniture-making/Source: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/luminary/issue3/Issue3article8.htmSource: https://www.periodoakantiques.co.uk/History_of_Antiques.php?srsltid=AfmBOoqH02J4z4hgMXqD4KMCx7zOCrzTOM91W9XgXpf6C9nINM6cmWODSource: https://fineart-restoration.co.uk/news/historic-comfort-antique-bed-restoration/Dimensions: External Height (Headboard Finial) = 162.5cm / 64” / 5ft 4”External Width = 101.5cm / 40” 3ft 4”External Length = 211cm / 83” / 6ft 11”Headboard Height (Horizontal Rail) = 145cm / 57” / 4ft 9”Footboard Height (Acorn Finials) = 99cm / 39” / 3ft 3”Footboard Height (Horizontal Rail) = 81.5cm / 32” / 2ft 8”Side Rail Height = 31cm / 12¼” / 1ft 0¼”Side Rail Depth = 15cm / 6”Floor to Underside of Side Rail = 15.5cm / 5¾”Mattress Dimensions:Mattress Length (Max) = 193cm / 76” / 6ft 3”Mattress Width (Slats) = 93cm / 36⅝” / 3ft 0⅝”These beds are designed to fit a standard UK single size mattress (3ft wide by 6ft 3” long).Condition Report: This is a fine quality English 17th century style pair of single beds, constructed form solid figured oak, circa 1980, in excellent original condition.
