This bed fits a UK single size mattress (3ft” wide x 6ft 3” long) but the bed frame will accommodate a custom mattress up to 3ft 6” wide (if you prefer a wider mattress). The large single four poster bed retains its original mahogany bed frame, with mahogany bar shape side rails, which secure to the head and footboard with tenons and large steel bolts. The wooden slats sit on top of the side rails. The bed frame would also accommodate a sprung box base, instead of the wooden slats. The design of the bed takes its influence from the Georgian period, with a protruding arched cavetto cornice, decorated with four turned finial. The canopy is supported by two octagonal tapering columns inlaid with boxwood and subtle floral carvings, at the front of the bed and two square tapering posts at the headboard. The canopy retains its original brass curtain rails, which allows the headboard section of the Edwardian four poster bed to be dressed with curtain / drapes. The brass curtain poles do not extend the full length of the bed. Please note, the drapes displayed in the photos of are decorative purposes only and do not come with the bed. The large single four poster bed headboard comprises a single mahogany panel and at the foot of the bed, there is an open footboard. The Georgian style four poster bed stands on four tapering block legs, terminating on original castors. This large single four poster bed retains its original patination, which is why the bed boasts a stunning rich brown mahogany colour. This small antique four poster bed would look stunning in either a contemporary or traditional setting. It dismantles into sections for easy transportation and we can provide good quality new mattresses if required. History & Provenance: Heal’s (“Heal and Son Ltd”) is a British furniture retail company comprising seven stores, selling a range of furniture, lighting and home accessories. In 2001, a guide published in association with the Victoria & Albert Museum wrote that for over two centuries Heal’s had been known for promoting modern design and for employing talented young designers. The original Heal’s firm was established in 1810 as a feather-dressing business by John Harris Heal and his son. In 1818, the business moved to Tottenham Court Road, London and expanded into bedding, bedstead and furniture manufacture and into retailing. By the end of the nineteenth century, it was one of the best-known furniture suppliers in London.[1] In the early 20th century Heal’s was one of the first retailers to bring electric lighting to the British market. During the second world war the factory at Tottenham Court Road was converted to produce parachutes. Heal’s featured at the Festival of Britain in 1951 and in 1977 restored the banqueting table at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
